Prom originally started in the United States and has rapidly grown in popularity throughout the millenia and is now the highlight of the year for school-leavers to mark the milestones of GCSEs and A-levels.

When does prom usually take place?

Prom season is fairly short, running from mid-June to mid-July. However, the business is still estimated to be worth £80 million every year. According to a survey by Holiday Inn, on average prom cost £244 per person, with 10% spending over £500 and 2% splashing out, spending more than £1,500.

Why is prom so popular?

Nearly all proms have a theme. This is normally decided by the organiser or prom committee and in many cases is voted on by your classmates to see what the most popular theme is.
The theme is important as it can affect your choice of dress, how you arrive and ultimately the cost of prom.

Lets be honest, prom is not cheap and sometimes teenages could use a little help with this expense. There are charitable organisations in the UK which will either lend you a dress to wear or  offer second dresses at a much lower price. Here are some we've found:

    • Prom Ally - offer free load prom dress and you only pay a £10 returns postage and packagin fee. To be eligibile you need to be referred by your school, local authority or another charity.
    • All Dressed Up - not-for-profit project that gifts donated prom dresses to school students in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire that need them. You can find out more about how to apply on their website.

Remember prom is nearly always after GCSEs or A-levels, which is why it is a good idea to starting thinking about prom early as you'll most likely be focused on revision leading up to it and you don't want to be overwhelmed with questions and things to sort out.

    6 Months Before Prom
Start thinking about what you want to wear and set a realistic budget. If you're fortunate enough to have a parent contribute to your prom fund, discuss it together with them before you finalise a budget. Around 6 months before tickets go on sale for prom and after-prom. As soon as they are available, it is best to buy them as in some instances there are only a limited number of tickers are available and you don't want to miss out.

    4 Months Before Prom
It is a good idea to book your transport to the venue if you are renting a limousine or other form of transportation. Proms all over the country happen within just 4 weeks of each other, so these can get fully booked quite early.
Decide who you are arriving with and if your friends will share the same transport and where you'll be picked up from.
Arrange to meet up early to make sure you have plenty of time for pictures before getting into the limo.
By now the search for the perfect prom dress should be underway. Keep in mind your prom themes and dress code that your school may have. Choosing a dress early will give you more options than there might be closer the time and allow for any altercations to be made.
